Flora and Fauna

Nature

Some ancient varieties of fauna and flora have survived intact on the island, elsewhere they have now vanished.
Fires and intensive sheep grazing, which traditionally has been the dominant activity, have formed the character over a large part of the island. Genuine woods now occupy only a small part of the island. They are generally found in impenetrable areas such as valleys. The prevailing varieties of tree are the cork and holm oak, and the chestnut tree.
The majority of the island's vegetation is the Mediterranean maquis, this can be found up to a height of 800m. It also appears in coastal areas. The maquis includes tall bushes that reach 4-5m in height; these are mainly wild olive, lentisk, locust, myrtle, laurel, juniper, cistus and, along the pebbly shores of streams oleander. The garriga is the maquis that doesn't grow higher than 50 cm in height; this includes sage, rosemary, heather, thyme and broom. The strong aromas of the Mediterranean maquis characterize the nights of Sardinian summer. In the proximity of the coastal shores grassland gramineae exists, particularly in the warmest and arid southern and eastern coasts. Here are also found zones of marshy wetlands with reeds and different marshy grasses.
The fauna of Sardinia is unique the following species are common: donkey, pig, wild boar, hare, horse are common. However they are generally smaller in size than those found on the continent. A Sardinian native is the splendid moufflon, whose male is characterized by great twisted horns. Among the reptiles, unique to the island is the Margined Turtle (Testudo Marginata), which can reach a length of 40 cm. Among the numerous birds, there are a variety of birds of prey: the griffon and the black vulture, the bearded vulture, the royal eagle, the Bonelli eagle and the magnificent queen hawk (hawk eleonorae). The monk seal, which was thought to be extinct, has been sighted in recent years in the Golfo di Orosei. Sardinia also possesses a species of wild cat which lives in some of the mountainous regions.
